TCP Credit Union is aware of the Equifax cybersecurity incident which may have potentially impacted approximately 143 million U.S. consumers. TCPCU reports credit related information on loans to credit bureaus, including Equifax, as explained in TCPCU’s Rules and Regulations and Privacy Notice. Equifax advises there is no evidence of unauthorized activity on Equifax’s core consumer or commercial credit reporting databases, which is where TCPCU reports members’ credit data information. Please be assured that your information at TCPCU has not been compromised. This incident occurred solely at Equifax.
Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially impacted and to enable them to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection. The offering, called TrustedID Premier, includes 3-Bureau credit monitoring of Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion credit reports, copies of Equifax credit reports, ability to lock and unlock Equifax credit reports, identity theft insurance, and Internet scanning for Social Security numbers. These services are being provided free to U.S. consumers by Equifax for one year. Consumers interested in the TrustedID Premier services must sign up for the service at the website indicated above.
The website provides additional information on steps consumers can take to protect their personal information. Equifax recommends that consumers with additional questions visit www.equifaxsecurity2017.com or call Equifax’s dedicated contact center at 866-447-7559, which the company set up to assist consumers about this issue. The call center is open every day (including weekends) from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 a.m. eastern standard time.
In addition to the website, Equifax will send direct mail notices to consumers whose card numbers or dispute documents with personal identifying information were impacted. Equifax is also in the process of contacting U.S. state and federal regulators and has sent written notifications to all U.S. state attorneys general, which includes Equifax contact information for regulator inquiries.
Although your information at TCPCU has not been compromised, TCPCU will be working closely with Equifax, and we will share additional information as we receive it.
NC Unclaimed Property
Each year credit unions are required by the North Carolina Department of Revenue to go through all of our accounts and any account that has had no activity (dormant) in the last five years the account must be closed. We start earlier in the year to try to make contact with our members in anyway possible to avoid sending the money to the state. If by chance your account was closed and your funds were sent to the state, you are able to reclaim that money. Please visit the website below to be able to collect on your closed account.

Each year more and more Americans have their identity stolen and most are unaware that it has even happen. The staff at TCP Credit Union (TCP CU) want to provide you with the information to help protect yourself against identity theft.
TCP CU cannot guarantee that your ID will never be stolen, but we will NEVER request personal information by email or text messaging including account numbers, passwords, personal identification information or any other confidential member information.
Fraudulent emails which request personal or confidential information, may be designed to appear as though they are originated from TCP CU. If this information is requested in an email, even if it appears to be from TCP CU, please do not respond or go to any links listed on the email. TCP CU will never contact you and ask for your debit card number or you full SSN. If we need to contact you, it will always be done in a manner that protects your personal, confidential information and we will clearly identify ourselves, we will not ask you for information we already have.
TCP CU works with local regulatory and law enforcement departments to be certain any type of illegal activity is stopped as soon as possible. We have multi-layer security to protect your confidential information and will continue to be vigilant in protecting it.

What is Identity Theft?
Identity theft is defined as when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. Identity theft can affect all your personal information, finances, credit history and your reputation. If you are a victim of identity theft, it can take time, money, and patience to resolve the matter.
Identity theft involves the unlawful acquisition and the use of someone’s identifying information, such as:
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Mother’s Maiden Name
- Driver’s License
- Credit Union, Bank or Debit Card Account Number
Tips to Protect Yourself
- Review your credit report annually. You have the right to request a credit report every 12 months from each of the 3 credit bureaus. To order your credit report, click here or call 1-877-322-8228.
- Read your bank, credit card, and account statements. If your statement has a mistake or your statement does not come on time, contact the business or financial institution.
- Shred all documents that may contain personal information; bank statements, unused checks, deposit slips, credit card statements, pay stubs, medical billings and invoices.
- Do not respond to any email, text, or phone message that asks you for your personal information. Legitimate companies will not ask for information in those forms.
Online Banking Security
TCP CU is committed to protecting you and your personal information. Our online banking uses several different layers to protect your personal information. All information within our online banking is transmitted through a secure site and is protected. When you first log on to online banking, you are required to set up a password that is personalized to you. After you create a password, you are required to pick three security questions and answers. These are a few layers of protection that we provide.
As fraud cases are on the rise, it is also important that you take your own measures to protect your personal information. Here are some tips on how to stay safe when performing transactions online.
- Do not respond to emails, text, or phone messages that ask for your personal information.
- Create passwords that mix letters, numbers, and special characters. You can also capitalize random letters in the password. Do not use personal information like birth dates or social security numbers as your passwords. Don’t use the same password for more than one account.
- If you perform banking transactions or shop online, be sure that you are using websites that protect your financial information. An encrypted site has “https” at the beginning of the web address.
- Never give out any personal information including user names, passwords, social security number, or birth date.
- When using public wireless networks don’t access your account over an unsecured wireless network or send information to any website that isn’t fully encrypted.
- Avoid using public computers to access your Online Banking
Debit Card Protection
Debit card usage have increased dramatically in recent years and fraudulent use of debit cards has also increased.
TCP CU is committed to providing you with the most advanced fraud protection solutions available. To protect you, we may restrict countries or states identified as having a high volume of fraudulent activity. TCP CU also limits the amount of the transactions that can be processed daily to help prevent fraudulent activity. TCP CU works closes with our card processor to monitor debit card activity to avoid fraudulent charges. If a fraudulent charge is suspected, the member is contacted immediately and the debit card is warmed.
TCP CU have some suggestions for you to better protect yourself when using a debit or credit card.
- Never give your debit or credit card information when requested by phone, email, or texting. The staff at TCP nor any other financial institution will ever request information from you in this manner. Please contact us immediately if you have such request from TCP CU.
- Carry your cards separate from your wallet. It can minimize your losses if someone steals your wallet or purse. Save your receipt to compare to your statement.
- Report any questionable charges to the card issuer.
- Notify your card issuer if your address changes or if you are traveling.
Regulation E: Electronic Fund Transfers
Regulation E is a consumer protection law designed to protect consumer accounts established primarily for personal, family or household purposes making electronic fund transfers. Excluded from coverage are non-consumer accounts, such as Trust, Corporations, and Partnerships. The term “electronic fund transfer’ (EFT) generally refers to a transaction initiated through an electronic terminal, telephone, computer, or magnetic tape that instructs, or authorizes a financial institution either to credit or debit a consumer’s asset account.
Regulation E gives consumers a way to notify their financial institution that an EFT has been made on their account without their permission. If you believe an unauthorized EFT has been made on your account, contact us immediately.
